Heath Literacy in Baton Rouge
PROGRAM OVERVIEW: Baton Rouge Advancing Health Literacy (BRAHL) is a Federally-funded project that serves communities within East Baton Rouge Parish (EBRP) that have been disproportionately impacted by COVID-19 due to their racial and ethnic makeup.
BRAHL serves an urban area of focus consisting of vulnerable citizens residing within primarily six (6) municipal districts located in East Baton Rouge Parish over a period of two (2) years. The Office of the Mayor- President proposes to work collaboratively with the Vulnerable Communities and Peoples Initiative ("VCPI") of the Southern University Law Center, Southern University System, a minority serving institution, in implementing an effective approach to enhancing the level of health literacy in identified vulnerable communities.
BRAHL - led by the Office of the Mayor-President in collaboration with VCPI- will:
- Provide monthly training and informational sessions in the target area;
- Build capacity of and power community-based organizations to implement best practices for implementing evidenced-based health literacy programs;
- Identify and equip community leaders with the necessary info1mation to develop a cadre of supporters to advance the goals and objectives of BRAHL;
- Utilize local media outlets (i.e. -Metro 21, local radio) to provide information to the public;
- Provide educational opportunities for SULC students to engage with identified communities in sharing public health information and resources, and provide supervised consultations and assistance for participants.
